Pete Yorn is 'The Man'
The last time I saw Pete Yorn was June 2002 in London when he opened for Coldplay at David Bowie's Meltdown. It was a good performance from what I can remember, the highlight definitely being 'For Nancy' the track I had discovered in the free-box at Music Millennium on one of those free disposable sampler cassettes record companies dole out. That seriously must have been the last promotional cassette tape ever created-I mean 2001 and 2002 was even a bit late for that. . .
Anyway, caught him at 6pm at his in store at Easy Street Records, the place of his very first ever in-store. He's currently on tour doing in-stores alongside regular tour dates, and recording the performances at each to be sold at the record stores three weeks later. The next one he did after Easy Street was at the very same Music Millennium in Portland that I first discovered him at.
People collected up front with a collection of items to be signed for sale on eBay as the back filled out to grand proportions. It was packed.
Performing a five song set of mostly rarities, the set began on a funny note. Very communicative through out, Pete Yorn responded to a woman speaking on her cell phone louder than he could be heard on the mic by saying "I expected more from you."
Shortly after, he broke a string and had to pick and briefly tune a new guitar, pausing the recording yet again. Aside from breaking out a new guitar, he only broke out a harmonica for one track, quickly returning to a sole guitar and vocals afterwards.
Included in the set were 'Good Advice' and 'Band Stand in the Sky'.
Pete mentioned wanting to duet with Willy Nelson before launching into 'The Man', the song in which he duets with Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks. Very appropriate considering the sets' country leanings, reminding my mom and I ever so slightly of Willy Mason. The song wasn't intended to be played, but after false starts and mixed harmonies on the song prior, Pete eventually decided to skip it in favor of audience request and the overwhelming choice was 'The Man'.
